The Cradle of Mankind

"Mrs Ples" Skeleton
Cradle Of Mankind

Declared a World Heritage Site in 1999, this 500km2 area on the western edge of Johannesburg is the scene of numerous internationally celebrated archaeological discoveries. Among these is the famous "Mrs Ples", a four-million-old, ape-like human skeleton discovered by Dr Robert Broom in 1947. This area has yielded the most conclusive evidence anywhere in the world as to our human origins.
In addition to its archaeological interest, the area also boasts a wealth of small nature reserves, battlefields, archaeological sites and country restaurants.
It’s the family place to visit these holidays.  The spectacular Visitor Attraction takes you back to your origins and the kids have a whale of a time, going on a great adventure on the underground boat ride, digging for fossils, phoning a Dodo and the mighty hairy mammoth and playing on the interactive exhibits.  Moms and Dads just love spending the day with the family as there’s so much to see and do.  They’ll be glad for the break to sit and relax, taking in the magnificent views, while enjoying a delicious buffet lunch at the Tumulus Restaurant or any one of the other fabulous eateries.
