Chapmans Peak Drive

The combination of steep, almost thrilling rocky inclines, shimmering blue waters and expansive skies simply take the breath away, one of the most beautiful drives in South Africa? Chapmans Peak Drive has surely got to be a top contender.

Created and built by Thomas Bain (an engineer who took all the credit for building this masterpiece) he was responsible for the construction of a number of mountain passes in the Western Cape. You will have no better view of Hout Bay and the Sentinel, as it cuts into the mountain walls and winds along near vertical cliffs and if you are fortunate enough, you might even see whales

frolicking in the ocean below. The views are gallant and ever changing, with plenty of viewpoints and experiences so ensure you have your camera. Chapman's Peak Drive was closed in the 1990s, after a rock fall caused a death and a subsequent lawsuit. After being re-engineered to protect motorists from falling rocks, Chapmans Peak Drive was reopened in December 2003; the drive has been made even greater with more lookout points, and has been built to be safer and secure. Chapman’s Peak Drive is part of the route of two of South Africa's biggest mass-participation races, the Cape Argus Cycle Race and the Marathon. There are a number of rest areas en route where one can simply stop and drink in the views or picnic. This is truly a Cape Town hotspot not to miss.
Chapmans Peak Highlights:

• Breathtaking scenery and vistas
• Spectacular coastal road
• Superb mountain hikes
• Alternative route from Hout Bay to Noordhoek
